GTSS combines the NMCI’s state-of-the-art facilities (including a 17 bridge simulator suite and survival pool) with GAC’s global reach and 50 years of shipping experience. Courses can take place at the NMCI or at the client’s location.
Our bespoke GTSS courses are tailored to suit the particular training requirements of maritime companies and groups. Clients from the all areas have worked with us to develop customised training on our state of the art marine simulators. We can also provide a suite of courses for companies looking to train their employees in numerous maritime short courses.

The course is designed to rediscover/review key topics that are necessary to conduct safe inbound and outbound passages to/from the berth.

Course Synopsis
The Advanced Ship Handling course is focused around reference material, discussion and participants previous experiences. The participants will be briefed on the applicable techniques in the classroom before demonstrating the application of the techniques in the simulator. The Presenter/Instructor shall facilitate and lead the class discussion and simulator exercise briefings/debriefings to ensure completion of set objectives within the allocated time.
The course is of 40 hours duration.
The main topics to be covered during the course will be:

Hydrodynamics
Power
Control Heading
Control Way
Anchors & Anchoring
Mooring Equipment
Environment
Tugs
Instructional methods to be utilized during the course shall include:
Classroom presentations
Group discussions

Fundamental Hydrodynamics
Participants will be able to identify and summarize the fundamentals of Hydrodynamics

Fundamental hydrodynamic forces that act upon a vessel underway
Participants will be able to identify and summarise the forces that act upon a vessel underway
3
Review how to control heading and how to make a turn
Participants will be able to identify and summarize the factors contributing to control of heading and making a turn.
Participants will be able to demonstrate in simulator exercises the application of the factors identified.
4
Directional stability and how it affects the control of heading
Participants will be able to summarize directional stability and how it affects the control of heading
5
Review how to control way
Participants will be able to summarize how to control way and demonstrate their understanding by means of application within simulator exercises
6
How to turn short round using the forces available
Participants will be able to demonstrate turning short round in the simulator
7
The effects of interaction between bottom, bank and other vessels
Participants will be able to identify and summarise vessel interaction and demonstrate dealing with the forces that may be experienced during a narrow channel transit.
8
Review the use of anchors
Participants will be able to identify, summarise and demonstrate anchoring procedures best practice
9
The use of tugs as a ship assist tool
Participants will be able to identify, summarise and demonstrate the use of tugs as ship assist tools.
10
The effects of wind and current on ship manoeuvrability
Participants will be able to identify, summarise and account for the effects of wind and current in the simulator
11
Proficiency in manoeuvring in narrow channels
Participants will be able to demonstrate the ability to manoeuvre within a narrow channel
Entry Standards
Deck Officers holding unlimited OOW Certificate of Competency.
Course Certificates
An advanced ship handling course certificate will be issued to participants who with complete attendance that pass the written evaluation and demonstrate Ship Handling knowledge/ability during the simulator assessments.
Course Intake Limitations
The course is limited to a minimum of 3 and a maximum of 8 Officers.
